Secondary Care Medicines Data records the medicines NHS trusts in England issue, month by month, drawn from hospital pharmacy stock systems and processed by the NHSBSA. It is the other half of the prescribing picture, and the half most analysis quietly leaves out.
Quantities arrive as unit-of-measure figures at product level, which takes care to aggregate honestly. Costs are indicative list prices. What trusts actually pay sits behind confidential framework and patient access scheme discounts, so treat hospital spend from SCMD as a ceiling, not a bill.
For hospital-led molecules, biologics above all, SCMD is where the story is. A biosimilar switch that is invisible in GP data is often unmissable here.
