ASTRO-PU.
Age, sex and temporary resident originated prescribing units: the general-purpose weighting for comparing overall prescribing between practices.
ASTRO-PUs weight a practice list by age band, sex and temporary residents to give a single denominator for overall prescribing volume or cost. Cost per ASTRO-PU is the standard fair comparison of total prescribing between practices with different populations.
They are blunter than STAR-PUs by design: one weighting for everything, rather than one per therapeutic group. For molecule-level work they mostly matter as the reason two practices with identical raw volumes can be prescribing very differently once their registered lists are taken into account.
STAR-PU · Age-and-sex weighted prescribing units for a specific therapeutic group, so practices with different populations can be compared fairly.
